The White Helmets won’t be able to take a day off this holiday season. With bombs pounding the suburbs of Damascus, the White Helmets will do what they always do. They’ll put on their white helmets and rush to the site of the attacks, carrying every civilian they can to safety.

These volunteers rush into danger knowing full well that warplanes might return to target them. Many of their colleagues have been killed that way. But still they go. They are the most selfless and noble people I have ever known.

This Christmas, let’s give back to the people who give everything. If we all chip in now, we can make sure every single White Helmet volunteer receives an end of year gift. 

There are 3,400 White Helmet volunteers. The idea is to bring together 3,400 people willing to chip in for an end of year gift these heroes can take home to their families.

The men and women of the White Helmets don’t receive salaries or wages. They only get modest stipends whenever funds are available. A gift like this will go a long way. It will provide some relief for the volunteers and their families at a time when prices have skyrocketed across the country, especially in besieged areas where people have to buy food and fuel for as much as 30 times the regular price.    

And beyond money this gift will be an important message of love and solidarity for the essential work they do and the sacrifices they make every day.

Every day, the White Helmets restore hope to their communities. They have saved more than 21,881 lives this year alone and 100,000 since their formation. Mounir, a volunteer from Idlib, told me recently that whenever they see a need for a service that could bring back a sense of normality to their communities they learn quickly how to provide it. They are clearing unexploded weapons to make farmland safe so that farmers can start growing crops. They are removing rubble and paving roads in destroyed neighbourhoods so that displaced people can go back home.
